1st Conference 2016

From October 6-8, 2016, the Network for Forced Migration Studies hosted the first conference of refugee research at the Osnabrück University. The aim was to provide a platform for discussion, thus promoting the exchange of research results from all fields of forced migration and refugee research.

The conference was entitled “65 Years of the Geneva Refugee Convention”. In 1951, the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees (Geneva Convention) was adopted, laying the foundation of today’s refugee regime. Since then, and increasingly in the current global refugee movements, the manifold challenges of refugee protection have repeatedly become apparent, and interdisciplinary refugee research is dedicated to addressing them. This involves understanding all aspects of flight and forced migration, which includes analyzing the needs of refugees as well as examining the various actors in refugee protection at the global, regional, national, and local levels as well as the obstacles that may stand in the way of effective protection.
